Memorial Day Weekend on Montauk Green

There must be thousands of outdoor flea market type events on Memorial Day weekend, and Memorial Day Weekend in Montauk looks a lot like them, with 80 artists sitting in chairs under tents on the Village Green, waiting for buyers. The difference is, these are better than your average artists appealing to a more than affluent community. It’s an event that’s well worth a look.

The Memorial Day Weekend show (it actually runs from May 25-27, 2018) is a production of the Montauk Artists Association, It’s strictly an art exhibition, with juried fine art ceramics, outdoor garden and table top sculpture, photographs, paintings, prints and drawings and limited jewelry and fiber art (no clothing). It caters to the New York City and Hamptons crowd, so it’s not a middle America affair – artists from all over the country (as well as France, Israel, Peru, Turkey and China) exhibit. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

While the Memorial Day event is one of the Montauk Artists’ Association two biggest annual events (they also host the original Show on the Green, August 17-19, 2018), the Association is active throughout the summer and fall, hosting ten shows a year at their home in the Long Island Railroad’s old Montauk Station (the waiting room is now the Depot Art Gallery). Shows run from Thursdays to a week from the following Monday, with artists receptions on the first Saturday. (The gallery is closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Gallery hours are noon-5 PM daily.

If you’re looking for more than just art, there’s plenty more to see in Montauk including the famed lighthouse (
