Annual Shelter Island 10K Run
Few races have the combination of beauty and history that you’ll find at the Shelter Island 10K. Now in its 39th year, the race was listed among the nation’s top road races by both Runner’s World and The Runner in the 1980s, and has since featured such luminaries as Olympians Meb Keflezighi and Greta Waitz, as well as the presence of legends like Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter and Joan Benoit-Samuelson.
Shelter Island, located between the North and South Forks and accessible by ferry, is a gorgeous race location. The course is USA Track & Field certified, circular and flat, with pretty stretches that run close to the water. Staging area is located on the grounds of Shelter Island High School. The run itself is in the evening, starting at 5:30 pm, with a post race party/festival starting at 7 at The Island Boat Yard. Activities actually begin Friday afternoon, with a pre-race pasta buffet and registration and package pick up from 5:30-8:00pm.
Two races are run on Saturday – the 10K ($40 pre-registration; $50 after June 15); and a less challenging 5K run/walk ($30 adults; $15 for kids 14 and under – $40 after June 15). Registration is free to all active military and veterans.
If you’re looking for even fun, Jet Blue Airways is adding to the excitement with random drawings at the awards ceremony, sponsoring two round trips on any Jet Blue non-stop flight destination from NY. You can also buy a $100 raffle ticket for a chance to win "Race Weekend at Sunset Beach Hotel."
