Fire Island Lighthouse Amateur Radio Weekend
Go back in time when radio operators were at the forefront of disseminating breaking news and world events. On the third full weekend of August (the 18th and 19th) amateur radio operators throughout the world transmit messages from lighthouses by the sea.
In the Long Island region, members of The Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club set up their radios at Fire Island Lighthouse to communicate with other radio operators around the world. At last count, at least 50 countries and 450 lighthouses have participated in this annual event.
The Lighthouse itself is open to climb daily from July to Labor Day, 9:30 am to 6 pm. Lighthouse tours cost $8 per adult, $4 for seniors (65+), free for active duty military and $4 for children 12 and under.
