Man of La Mancha
The John W. Engeman Theater in Northport is a fair distance from Broadway, but its performances are closer than you might expect. It draws its casts directly from the Broadway talent pool, and draws its repertoire (at least at times) from some of the greatest of Broadway shows. Such is the case with Man of La Mancha.
Based on Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha tells the story of a delusional Spanish knight and his quest to restore chivalry to the world, and to win his lady love at the same time. One of the first musicals based on a piece of historical literature, it won 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and may be best known for “The Impossible Dream,” a song everyone over a certain age can belt out (badly) upon request.
Man of La Mancha plays through October 28th, with regular price tickets going for $73. Friday performance is at 8 PM, but performances run Wednesday through Sunday, with many 3 PM matinees scattered in. Every seat is good, as the charming theater is far smaller than Broadway houses.
