24th Annual Charles Dickens Festival
“A Christmas Carol” is one of the most classic holiday stories ever written, whether you enjoy the original British novel, its myriad of stage and screen retellings, or even its Muppet interpretation. But to really bring it to life, for one enchanting weekend each year the beautiful seaside town of Port Jefferson transforms into Dickensian-era London for its annual Charles Dickens Festival.
The Charles Dickens festival is the perfect sampler of holiday activities and delights. There’s something for everyone during this magical weekend. Characters like Ebenezer Scrooge, Father Christmas, and chimney sweeps will be out on the streets making you feel like you’ve been transported to the past, and you’ll love wandering the seaside village and discovering all the festival has in store. You can ice skate in the downtown center, listen to a host of holiday caroler groups around the village, eat delicious period treats like roasted chestnuts and Christmas cookies, and (of course) enjoy a performance of “A Christmas Carol,” as well as classic shows like “The Nutcracker” and live musical performances from a variety of others.
The 24th Annual Charles Dickens Festival will take place on Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th. Almost all events are free, outside of a few things you’d expect to cost more (like carriage rides and teas.) Activities start at 9 am, and never really stop -- for a complete listing, visit the website. The village will be crowded so make sure to arrive early to find street parking.
