Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite
When you think of the Nutcracker, you probably think of Tchaikovsky, but at Stony Brook’s beloved Jazz Loft, they think of Duke Ellington. That’s because the jazz great gave one of Christmas’ most beloved traditions a twist with a classic jazz rendition – and the Jazz Loft’s 17-piece Big Band will be performing Ellington’s arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s most popular ballet this December, replacing violins and cellos with saxophones and trombones.
“Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite” will be led and narrated by the Jazz Loft’s founder, renowned trumpeter and jazz educator Tom Manuel. You’ll be singing along to all your favorite songs with swing leader and vocalist Danny Bacher, who will be on hand to sing some big band twists on Christmas classics. If Big Band isn’t your preferred jazz flavor, make sure to check out the Loft’s musical calendar, which is filled with Christmas performances -- The Jazz Loft has become one of Long Island and New York’s premier destinations for live music, as well as the best place to catch the genre’s most exciting artists.
Duke Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite” will be performed on Thursday, December 5th and Friday, December 6th, as well as Thursday, December 12th and Friday, December 13th, starting at 7 pm. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for kids, with children under 5 free. Make sure to arrive early to check out the Jazz Loft’s collection of amazing historic musical memorabilia!
