Long Island Science Center
Lest you think music and dancing is all that Winterfest is about, we thought we’d take a few minutes for a few activities that take place during the day – starting with the Long Island Science Center.
The Long Island Science Center isn’t the largest, but it’s packed with fun. There’s a virtual reality experience that allows you to swim with manatees or hang with dinosaurs; a giant light box that lets you draw in light while learning about the spectrum; a wall-mounted marble rollway with moveable ramps, cups and gutters; and the current special exhibit brings some of Leonardo DaVinci’s Renaissance-era engineering sketches to life. Come on the weekends, and there are special shows like MakerSpace (hands-on activities, which take place on both Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 am) and an Engineering Lab that shows you how catapults work (Saturday at 2 pm.) Museum hours are 11 am-5 pm on weekend days; admission is $10 per person.
If you’re around on Saturday mornings, give the Riverhead Indoor Farmers Market a peek. The North Fork has long been known for growing some of the best produce in all of New York, and the Indoor Farmer’s Market (54 East Main Street, Riverhead) is one of the best places to shop for local goodies from more than 50 of Long Island’s best gastronomic vendors – from the Peconic River Herb Farm to Blue Duck Bakery. Hours are 10am -2 pm, market is fully heated and parking is available all down Riverhead’s Main Street.
